Sample Session 2 – U8

 

  • Footwork: 
    • Emphasis:  Balance & Agility / Field Awareness / Technical Skills
    • Coaching Points:  Both feet / Head up / Ball Close
    • Phase 1 - Grid to dribble in (20 yards by 20 yards)
      • Move how comfortable with the ball
      • Alternative right foot then left foot
      • Right foot only
      • Left foot only
      • Inside of feet only
      • Outside of feet only
      • Right foot alternate inside then outside
      • Left foot alternate inside then outside
      • Hop on one foot and dribble
      • Hop on other foot and dribble
    • Phase 2
      • Call out direction such as:
        • Change speed
        • Change direction
        • Perform pullback
        • Make a move
          • Fake inside and go outside with outside of foot
          • Fake shot and increase speed
          • Just for fun…step over
          • Just for fun…spin move
      • Assign numbers and / or colors to the items above
        • Green – Change speed
        • 3 – Perform pullback
        • Etc…
      • Hold a number of fingers in the air for the kids to note how many

 

Overlay…play knock out

Overlay…1 or 2 players without a ball need to capture one.Player losing his/her ball needs to gain a new one from anyone except the person who took theirs.

 

  • Footwork:
    • Emphasis:  Communication / Balance & Agility / Technical Skills / Field Awareness
    • Coaching Points:  Be in control dribbling / Communicate
    • Phase 1 (3 cones 20 yards apart)
      • 2 players on the end cones
      • Players 1 and 3 dribble to the cone and stops the ball – goal is to arrive at the cone at the same time
      • Players 1 and 3 run backwards back to starting cone
      • Players 2 and 4 sprint to the middle cone and retrieve the ball – again goal is to arrive at the same time
      • Players 2 and 4 dribble back to the end cone
      • Repeat a few times then switch players 1&2 and 3&4
    • Phase 2
      • Same as above but do not need to arrive at the same time
    • Phase 3
      • Players retrieving the ball in the middle need to pull the ball back instead of turning when arriving at the cone

 

  • Passing:
    • Emphasis:  Communication / Technical Skills
    • Coaching Points:  Communicate / Proper Pass w/ inside of foot / Proper control w/ inside of the foot / Keep space and move after passing
    • Phase 1 (2 cones 15 yards apart)
      • To start…2 players on one cone and one on the other
      • Pass to the other cone then follow your pass to that cone
      • Repeat…
      • Start at 2 or 3 touch….get to one touch
      • Encourage players to get to the cone quickly and prepare to receive the next pass
    • Phase 2 (3 cones 15 yards apart)
      • To start…2 players on one cone and 1 on each of the other 2
      • Pass to center cone – player turns with the ball and passes to the other cone.  Passing player should tell receiving player to turn.
      • Follow to the cone you pass to and repeat
      • Encourage the players to direct the drill as needed as opposed to the coach
  • Shooting: 
    • Emphasis:  Communication / Technical Skills
    • Coaching Points:  Communicate / Proper strike with instep / controlled placement with shot
    • Phase 1:  Multiple simulated goals (gates) across a 40x40 playing area
      • Players in groups of 2
      • Player 1 with the ball identifies a gate and communicates it to partner
      • Player 1 positions to shoot on the goal then strikes the ball
      • Player 2 recovers the ball and identifies the next gate to shoot at

 

  • Scrimmage (30x30 playing area with 4 goals)
    • Emphasis:  Whatever aspects practice focused on plus spreading the field
    • Coaching Points:  Align to practice emphasis and spread the field
    • Phase 1:
      • Set objective that must be met before scoring (ie. complete 1 or 2 passes – perform a pullback or a move) that aligns with the focus on the session
      • Players defend only one goal and can score in any of the other 3
      • Coach should introduce new balls (no throw ins – corners – goal kicks).  Introduce a new ball to players lagging behind.
      • Keep score to encourage competition
    • Phase 2:
      • Remove neutral goals and play end to end
      • Stop play a few times to re-emphasize the coaching points.
